Functional
endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive technique
used to restore sinus ventilation and normal function.
The most suitable candidates for this procedure have
recurrent acute or chronic infective sinusitis, and
an improvement in symptoms of up to 90 percent may be
expected following the procedure. Fibreoptic telescopes
are used for diagnosis and during the procedure, and
computed tomography is
used
to assess the anatomy and identify diseased areas.
The
larynx is another name for the voice box. It sits at the
entrance of the windpipe (trachea) in the neck and in
front of the food pipe (gullet or oesophagus). It is the
lump you can see in front of your neck called the 'Adam’s
apple'. This is often much easier to see in men.
The larynx is a tube about 2 inches (5cm) long in adults.
It plays an important role in
-- Breathing, allowing air to reach our lungs
-- Swallowing, protecting your windpipe --
Speech, producing sound.
